Care

Treat it well. It'll last a lifetime.

Felted wool is one of the most durable natural materials on earth, but it has its own rules. Follow these and your hat will outlast every synthetic alternative on the market.

First use (before your first session)

Your Saunaplants hat arrives slightly stiff from its journey. This is normal. Before your first sauna, briefly dampen the hat with cool water and shape it to your head with your hands. The felt will relax naturally within your first few sessions and settle into a comfortable, personalised fit.

There is no need to pre-wash or condition your hat before use. It is ready to wear.

Washing: How to wash your hat

1. Hand wash — always preferred
Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water (never hot). Add a small amount of wool-safe detergent or a drop of gentle shampoo. Submerge the hat and gently squeeze. Never wring, twist, or scrub.

2. Rinse thoroughly
Rinse with cool water until the water runs completely clear. Press gently against the side of the basin to remove excess water. Do not wring.

3. Reshape while damp
Lay the hat on a clean towel and gently roll the towel to press out remaining moisture. Reshape the hat by hand — pull the brim flat, round the crown — and lay flat or hang to air dry away from direct sunlight or heat.

4. Machine wash (if needed)Use the wool or delicate cycle at 30°C maximum. Place the hat inside a mesh laundry bag. Use only wool-safe detergent. Remove immediately and reshape. Never put in the dryer.

How often to wash: Wool is naturally antimicrobial and odour-resistant — you do not need to wash after every session. Air the hat between uses by hanging it somewhere dry and ventilated. Wash when it feels damp or heavy after extended use, roughly every 10–15 sessions for regular users.

Do's & don'ts

The key rules

Do
Air dry naturally after every sauna session
Reshape gently while the felt is damp
Store in a dry, ventilated spot
Use wool-safe detergent only
Spot clean small marks with a damp cloth

Don't
Wring, twist, or scrub the felt
Put in the tumble dryer — ever
Wash in hot water (above 30°C)
Iron or steam directly on the felt
Store damp or in a sealed bag

Longevity
Keeping it in shape - Always air after use
Hang your hat somewhere with airflow after every session. Felt that dries slowly and repeatedly in a closed bag will eventually lose its structure and develop odour.
Keep away from direct heat
Never dry near a radiator, fireplace, or in direct sunlight. Heat shrinks and stiffens felt permanently. Your sauna is the only heat it should experience.

Storage between seasons
Store in a cool, dry place with space to breathe — ideally a cotton bag or the original kraft box. Avoid compression, which can permanently flatten the crown.
Minor pilling is normal
Some surface pilling may appear with extended use. Remove gently with a fabric comb or cashmere stone — never scissors. This does not affect the hat's performance.

Questions
Still unsure? We're here.

Felted wool is unfamiliar territory for a lot of people and every hat is slightly different depending on its dye and thickness. If you're uncertain about anything — or if your hat has had an accident. Reach out at saunaplants@gmail.com and we'll help you sort it out.
